BOOK REVIEW
reviewed by Knife World Staff

Remington has long occupied a position near the top of the knife collecting heap. Consequently, Remington has been a staple of probably every general knife price guide ever written, in addition to very focused books on Remington’s Bullet patterns and sheath knives and a variety of reprints of vintage Remington catalogs.

These have all been very useful resources, but while the price guides have tried to list values for every known Remington pocketknife and the catalog reprints have tried to illustrate every known pattern in a particular time frame, no one has provided both in the same package. And no wonder! Unlike Case’s comparative simplicity in the post-1920 era, Remington’s 1920-1940 pocketknife offerings are one BIG momma to put your arms around. There are, quite literally, thousands of pattern and handle material combinations to consider. To illustrate and value them all would take, well, an entire book!

That’s what authors Ron Stewart and Roy Ritchie have attempted with Remington Knives, Past & Present, and they’ve done a superb job of it. Every Remington catalog the two could get their hands on was scoured, the knives sorted in sequential order, assigned a current collector value, and added to the book along with the catalog illustration yes (every knife is illustrated). There are collector sections here for Remington pocket knives, letter openers, and fixed blade (hunting) knives. The modern Remingtons aren’t neglected, either, covering the Bullet year knives, the modern Remington Silver Bullet series, the Wildlife Series, the Stren fish knives, and the yearly knife posters too. Scattered throughout the book are vintage ads and other catalog snippets, as well as information on Remington history and handle materials (including the different varieties of Pyremite).

That’s not to say that every knife ever made with a Remington logo can be found in this book – of course there were many non-catalog specials and other oddities that could keep Ron & Roy busy for years. But it’s one great start, and for just $16.95 you can have the pleasure of pushing all those old reprint catalogs to the far end of your bookshelf. You shouldn’t need them much anymore!
