GOINS ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CUTLERY MARKINGS We're temporarily out of stock of the GOINS ENCYCLOPEDIA book -- more are on the way, but it will probably take until early March before we receive them. If you place an order for one in the meantime, we will ship it as soon as they arrive. http://www.knifeworld.com/goinenofcutm.html

ANTIQUE AMERICAN SWITCHBLADES Mark Erickson's essential book on vintage American-made automatics was unavailable for a few months, but it's in stock again and we give the book our highest recommendation. A must-have for anyone with the slightest interest in the subject. http://www.knifeworld.com/ant-amer-switchblades.html

OFFICIAL SCOUT BLADES Ed Holbrook's outstanding book about Boy Scout, Cub Scout, Girl Scout, Camp Fire Girl and Brownie knives, axes and related items is also back in stock after a long delay on the printing end of things. This is another title that earns our highest recommendation. http://www.knifeworld.com/officialscout.html

Hard-to-find cutlery books keep coming in, while others are moving out -- as always! Several of last month's rarer titles sold right away, but I've found a few more. I've even located a second copy of that rare 1975 Russell book, to replace the one that sold right away last month.

Check out the complete list online, there are dozens of titles available -- and our prices are usually lower than the used-book dealers'!

• WEBSITE UPDATES ________________________________________________

We've finally(!) added images of the COLOR Knife Worlds that our subscribers have already gotten comfortable with. We've just printed our 10th color issue, and the end product keeps looking better each month... so it's probably past time to show rest of the world what KNIFE WORLD is up to.

Our website host recently made some changes that rendered the three month trial subscription request form inactive for a while, but we've finally figured out what happened and have now got it up and running again.

Hoping to find more time to tune up the website and add some additional features in the coming months. Watch for more changes -- the more significant ones will be announced here!

• in the mail now - the MARCH 2008 issue of "KNIFE WORLD" ____________________________________________________________

MARCH'S KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:

... "THE NAGLE REBLADE STORY" by MIKE LOSICCO One of the most famed and desired of the short lived American cutlery firms is the Nagle ReBlade Knife Co. of Poughkeepsie, NY -- pioneers of the replaceable blade knife. Mike Losicco's well done article tells the company's story and illustrates some extremely rare Nagle knives and memorabilia.

... "DOC WACHOLZ, STILL BEATING AWAY" by EDWARD BELL Every knifemaker has their own unique story to tell, but Steve "Doc" Wacholz' tale is more unique than most. This is the story of how one man went from beating the drums in a well known heavy metal rock band, to beating hot steel into knife blades in his NC knife shop, as told by our occasional correspondent.

... "BRITISH MILITARY SWITCHBLADES" by DOUG GROWITZ and NEAL PUNCHARD This month's "Military Edge" presents three unusual and extremely rare 20th century British automatic knives. The authors present a collection of evidence suggesting that all three are likely prototypes made for the military by Joseph Rodgers & Sons. I'd sure like to find a "sleeper" like these at the next knife show!

... "ANTLER CROWN HANDLED KNIVES" by MICHAEL BLACK Why do handles made of a peculiarly shaped piece of antler so appeal to lovers of sharp steel? Staff correspondent Michael Black wonders too, and investigates what sort of offerings a collector might discover.

... "SPEAR HUNTING - THEN AND NOW" by WILLIAM HOVEY SMITH A spear is, after all, just a knife with a long handle -- so why not take a closer look? An authority on unusual hunting techniques, Hovey Smith is just the man to explain the past and present of spear hunting, and perhaps tempt the reader to learn more about this neglected topic.

... "FIELD TRIAL: WILLIAM HENRY 'MOJAVE'" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT This month, our Field Trial editor opts for something more delicate (and attractive!) than he's ever tested before – a finely crafted gentlemans folder from William Henry Knives. Yes, he really did take one of these beauties out in the field, and use it!

... lots to report in "KNIFE NEWS", in the wake of the SHOT Show...

"Wenger Announces Reproduction of the First Swiss Army Knife" This is really cool, folks: Wenger is producing an exact reproduction of the Swiss Army's "Soldier knife" from 1893, and it looks great!

"New Paul Knives from Lone Wolf" "Bigger and Smaller" is the key here: if none of the previous axial lock Paul models quite met your desires, the new tactical-sized "Protector" and diminutive "Executive" are bound to do the trick.

"Small Town Retailers Get a Hand -- from Case and Brooks & Dunn" W.R. Case & Sons and country music artists Brooks & Dunn are pairing up to support and pay tribute to small-town retailers, small-town values and the spirit of all things “Made in America.” Sounds like a really neat program.

And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our full color centerspread dedicated to handmade knives? The latest issue features C.J. CAI, DON LOZIER, BRIAN TIGHE, JOHNNY STOUT, JOHN BARTLOW, PAUL COOPER, RUSS ANDREWS, LEON TREIBER, DANIEL STEPHAN, and RON NEWTON, who's not only a fine fellow but as good a knifemaker as they come.

As always, between the covers you'll find:

BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT (our question-and-answer section) IRONS IN THE FIRE (the editor's monthly soapbox) LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CLASSIFIEDS (wanted, for sale, and miscellaneous) CLUB CORNER (the ONLY current & complete list of knife clubs in print) EVENTS CALENDAR (covering all knife shows, hammer-ins, & other events)

KNIFE WORLD truly is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES. We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS ________________________________________________

The postal service continues to amaze, this past month with dozens of JANUARY "KNIFE WORLDS" delivered the same day, the next day, or even a few days AFTER the FEBRUARY issue was received (most of which we had already replaced). It's definitely not a good thing when a FOUR WEEK head start makes no difference in delivery!

Honestly folks, I don't have a personal vendetta against the U.S. Postal Service, and certainly not against those who work there. I just want the same service we were getting before last June -- flawed though it was. But immediately after our postage fees were hiked about 30%, delivery problems soared... so I think I have some reason to complain.

At least we can say that the new issues continue to look just fabulous, and that we have some excellent articles in the works right now -- so I expect this trend to continue.

Incidentally, we're pleased to say that our pursuit of a better KNIFE WORLD has been received with **outstanding** support from the knife industry, in the form of advertising. Our heartfelt thanks to all of our advertisers, and I trust that our faithful subscribers will return the favor by choosing to support those who support KNIFE WORLD.

As usual for this time of year, a TON of knife shows are just around the corner - check KNIFE WORLD's Events Calendar for all the details. Several of these are on my schedule, and I'll hope to see you at one of them!
