some difficulties along the way, and weeks became months... you get
the picture.
We just received word this morning that books are being shipped TODAY,
so we should have them back in stock by early next week. If you've
got a copy on backorder with us, it'll ship as soon as they come in...
and if you don't have a copy, take a look at the book review on our
website and see why everyone likes it so much. A required reference
for scout knife buffs!

• now in the mail - the NOVEMBER 2007 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"
____________________________________________________________
NOVEMBER'S KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:
... "A RARE JAMES BLACK KNIFE?" by MICHAEL T. ROBERTS
A special article for KW --an important antique bowie knife is
discovered at a Civil War reenactment, eventually finding its way to
the Historic Arkansas Museum. Here's the story from its discoverer!
... "DON HANSON III - THE SUNFISH MAN" by B.R. HUGHES
Here's a look at one of the "new" ABS Mastersmiths, who's been
making knives a long time and in a wide variety of styles -- yes,
including the fabled 'sunfish' pocketknife pattern.
... "KNIFE IMAGES ON THE CHEAP" by RON BUCHER
"Uncle Ron" of internet fame (at least to knife lovers) explains
the hows and whys of getting good quality "pictures" of your knives
with nothing more than a common scanner. The perfect article for
those of you who need good knife photos but don't want to deal with
the hassle of a camera and photo booth.
... "HOW DO YOU LOSE TWO GIANTS?" by DAVID ANTHONY
The author of the new book on Tidioute's cutlery history checks in
with a fascinating article about two "giants" from Beaver Falls, PA
-- a huge knife and fork made for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in
Philadelphia, spurned by the judges and now seemingly vanished.
... "SPECIAL FORCES PROTOTYPE BOLO" by FRANK TRZASKA
Yet another groundbreaking article from the master of military
knife research, this time revealing all six of the bolos tested by
Special Forces in Vietnam with closeup photos of a newly discovered
prototype bolo that was tested but never adopted!
... "MAKING AND USING STONE KNIVES" by WM. HOVEY SMITH
Here's something a little different for those of us accustomed to
steel bladed knives -- an article about knives made of stone,
flintknapper Ken Austin, and of how well a stone knife performs in
skinning wild game.
Book Reviews of:
... "KNIVES 2008" (reviewed by MAC OVERTON)
... "ART OF THE KNIFE" (reviewed by MAC OVERTON)
And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our handmade knife centerspread?
November's issue features: RAY KIRK, TED OTT, LIN RHEA, MIKE FRANKLIN,
J.R. REEVES, JERRY HALFRICH, DANIEL CHINOOK, CLIFF O'DELL, GAIL LUNN,
and DAVID STEIER, who I've had the pleasure of visiting with at the
last few NKCA shows in Dalton, GA. He'll surely turn up again this
weekend at the NKCA Shepherdsville (Louisville) Kentucky show, as
David lives thereabouts. He turns out some fine gentleman's folders.
As always, between the covers you'll find:
BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT (our question-and-answer section)
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
CLASSIFIEDS (wanted, for sale, and miscellaneous)
CLUB CORNER (the ONLY current listing of knife clubs in print)
EVENTS CALENDAR (covering all knife shows, hammer-ins, & other events)

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS
________________________________________________
Since this is my space to ramble, can I waste a few lines ranting and
raving about the U.S. Postal "Service"? Note that the word "service"
is in quotes; I have placed quotes around "service" because this is
certainly NOT what Knife World subscribers have been receiving ever
since the postage rates were raised yet again this summer. On the
contrary: lost issues of the September issue in particular have been
on the order of TEN TIMES WORSE than a year ago, and some folks are
still getting them now, 10 weeks after they entered the postal system.
Every month has been bad, but the September issue takes the cake --
far and away the worst delivery problems in our 30 years in business.
To make things perfectly clear: KNIFE WORLD has NOT missed an issue,
a deadline, or anything else. We're paying the postage, including the
postal increases USPS said was necessary in order to provide (quote)
"a more efficient mail system", and I have yelled at everyone I can
think to yell at. The postal service's "service" has just been FAR
worse than it ever has before.
My friends in the newspaper industry, who mail things the same way
but with more frequency than we do, have encountered all of the same
problems. They tell me that things are just starting to get better,
and for the sake of all small publishers, I sure as heck hope so.
End of rant.
On a more positive and personal note, thanks to everyone for their
thoughts and wishes on my recent wedding, which probably also
explains why you didn't get a email newsletter last month.
Miss Chris and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming show!
