New! " THE STANDARD KNIFE COLLECTORS GUIDE, 5th Edition "
________________________________________________________
By Ron Stewart and Roy Ritchie
Stewart and Ritchie's more general price guide focuses primarily
on pocketknives, and includes almost 1500 illustrations - many in
an expanded COLOR section. I'm very impressed with the usefulness
of the new edition, particularly when it comes to the information
and illustrations of blades, pocketknife patterns, and handle
materials. A very good resource, especially for the beginner.
Check out the detailed BOOK REVIEW oat the link below!
Softcover, 752 pp., $16.95 (great value!)

OTHER KNIFE BOOK NEWS

KNIVES OF THE U.S. MILITARY IN VIETNAM by Mike Silvey: Not many
copies left of this superb book, and no more will be printed.
If you have been putting off the purchase of this title,
consider yourself forewarned!
http://www.knifeworld.com/knivofusmili.html
RANDALL MADE KNIVES: A REFERENCE BOOK is a BRAND NEW book from
Sheldon & Edna Wickersham, the team behind the very popular Randall
Knife Timelines. It is not available just yet, but we have an advance
copy here at the office and can tell you that Randall collectors
are going to be very excited about this one. There are several
different Randall books out there, and while most of them are very
good we've long felt that none of them did an adequate job in
educating collectors about Randall dating, variations, and rarities.
Collectors, you're finally gonna get the book you've been waiting for!
THE U.S. M3 TRENCH KNIFE OF WORLD WAR II: We have these BACK IN STOCK
again, but the author tells us that supplies are starting to dwindle
and that there will not be another reprint. Suffice it to say, don't
dawdle too long if you would like a copy -- out of print military
knife books have been fetching some ridiculous prices on eBay.
http://www.knifeworld.com/um3trknofwow.html
KNIFE DESIGNS CD-ROM: We are down to the very last of these, no more
will be produced. This is a nice little resource, whether your
interest is primarily for historical research of if you want to
examine the designs of the past for inspiration. It is of
particular interest to collectors of automatic knives and other
unusual opening mechanisms.
http://www.knifeworld.com/knifedesignscd.html
OFFICIAL SCOUT BLADES: Still waiting for the latest revision from
author Ed Holbrook. We'll let you know as soon as it's out.
COUNTERFEITING ANTIQUE CUTLERY by Witcher: SOLD OUT. I believe that
the National Knife Collectors Association still has some of these
in stock. At one time they were offering a free book if you joined
the NKCA, which is as good a deal as our $15 price. Check the "Links"
page of our website for the NKCA's website.
BEST OF KNIFE WORLD, VOL. III: Has gone OUT OF PRINT.
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF POCKETKNIFE REPAIR: Has gone OUT OF PRINT.
STAN SHAW, MASTER CUTLER: Has gone OUT OF PRINT.
RANDALL QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE: Has gone OUT OF PRINT.

now in the mail - the AUGUST 2007 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"
____________________________________________________________
AUGUST'S KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:
... "MICHAEL BELL - DRAGON FLY FORGE" by DENNIS ELLINGSEN
A look at a longtime west coast craftsman who specializes in serious
Japanese swords. Nice photos, and a sword-swallowing tale that will
send chills down your spine!
... "VINTAGE PROTOTYPES" by DOUG GROWITZ
The author's thoughts on what constitutes a "prototype" knife
whether vintage or modern, and some interesting examples of vintage
prototypes.
... "MODIFYING THE OPINEL" by ABE ELIAS
Everyone who has appreciated knives for some time is probably
familiar with the Opinel, that inexpensive ring-locking workhorse
from France. One of the nice things about them is how well they lend
themselves to simple modifications -- perhaps this article will give
you an idea or two for your own.
... "MY FRIEND BOB" by JOE SEALE
A tribute to longtime Western States collector Bob White, who has
made an awful lot of friends in his 97 years -- and more all along.
... "AUSTRALIAN WWII KNIFE VARIATIONS" by DON ANDERSON
In his first contribution to KW, the author presents some
interesting and heretofore unpublished variations of WWII era
military type knives of Australian origin (or thereabouts). Fans
of so-called "Ranger" knives and the like will not want to miss this!
... "THE CONDOR COMBAT MACHETE" Field Trial by M. WILLSON OFFUTT
Here's an inexpensive tool that earns its keep in the field, and
with style to boot!
... "BLADESMITHS REACHING KIDS AT FRENCH CAMP ACADEMY" by KW Staff
A real feel-good story -- bladesmiths bonding together to provide
opportunities for interested kids, many of whom come from difficult
home settings. Located in Mississippi, the project at FCA is coming
along nicely, but they still need some assistance -- please use the
contacts listed in the article or email me if you can help.
... "BIG BOOK OF POCKET KNIVES"
... "POCKET KNIFE TRADER'S PRICE GUIDE"
(Book Reviews by KNIFE WORLD Staff)
As always, BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT contains a varied mix
of items to evaluate and discuss, and a story or two as part of the
package. This month, he addresses "Prussian Crown" trade knives, a
rare "Frank Buck" BUCK knife, and the tale of Gerber's LST design --
one of Blackie Collins' best designs, and worst business deals!
And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our handmade knife centerspread?
For the first COLOR installation, we offer forth MARVIN SOLOMON,
JOHN YOUNG, JOHN PERRY, A.G."BARNEY" BARNES, WAYNE HENSLEY, RON BEST,
CHARLES SAUER, MIKE YOUNT, CLIFF POLK and JERRY FISK, who just
started his own brand of benchmade hunting knives. More on that soon!
And let's not forget LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, the CLASSIFIEDS, the only
current listing of local, regional and national knife clubs anywhere
in CLUB CORNER, and the largest EVENTS CALENDAR anywhere -- we
wouldn't want you to miss a nearby knife show, hammer-in, or other
event, they're too much fun! Oh, yeah -- and there's IRONS IN THE FIRE,
this editor's monthly soapbox for whatever strikes my fancy.
KNIFE WORLD truly is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES.
We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!
http://www.knifeworld.com/knifwormag.htm
What about JULY's issue?
You've heard the story before, I'm just too busy to keep up with
everything, including these newsletters! But the major articles were:
... "CASE PEANUTS AND ALMOST-PEANUTS" by GARY MOORE
Another superb piece by Mr. Moore, covering Case's '20 pattern
peanut as well as the '42 and '26-1/2 patterns all the way through
the USA era. A wealth of information for collectors, which can be
found NOWHERE else in print.
... "SHAWN MCINTYRE" by DOC WACHOLZ
A very interesting profile of the amiable Aussie bladesmith, by
none other than our favorite rock n' roll drummer turned knife
writer and bladesmith.
... "SHARP & LOCKED OPEN PART IV" by MICHAEL BLACK
The conclusion of Mr. Black's series on the variety of blade
locking mechanisms available on today's factory knives. Several
readers have commented on the closeup photos that have accompanied
each article. We agree, very nice indeed!
... "1998 U.S. ARMY CONTRACT M7 BAYONET" by FRANK TRZASKA
Will Frank T. ever run out of mysterious military edged weapons to
track down and discuss? It seems that he's always digging up new
information on another item I didn't even know existed. Here's another
example... and look out for the one with the red thread in the sheath!!
... "AN ISRAELI COMBAT KNIFE" by BOB CAMPBELL
And that's exactly what it is. Rather, they are: Dustar is a company
making high grade combat knives in Israel, for Israelis, and they now
have two models though the original Arad is emphasized in Campbell's
review.
... "WHITTLING" by ABE ELIAS
A good introduction to whittling as folk art, with notes on
knife selection, general whittling tips, and a basic project in
the form of whittling a wooden spoon.
