· " THE BIG NEWS " for KNIFE WORLD readers (or, why you will say WHOH! when the mailman delivers your June issue) ________________________________________________________

Hi folks... it's been a long time since the last Online Newsletter! All of our subscribers know what we've been up to, or they do if they've been reading my monthly "Irons in the Fire" column.

Since the last online newsletter, our old ISP sold our account and messed up our ability to send Newsletters, which was the first reason for the delay. Not long after that, the printing firm that had printed KNIFE WORLD for nearly 30 years went out of business, forcing us to find another printer -- and fast!

With changes come opportunities, however. The printing firm we finally settled on, Lakeway Printers in Morristown, TN, has provided us with opportunities that we could never before consider, and these are resulting in even more changes that will expect to be as exciting to our subscribers as they are to us.

*NEW PAPER*: We have upgraded the paper in KNIFE WORLD to a brighter, whiter grade that really highlights the photography, and should not yellow as much in the coming years. We know how you love to save those old Knife Worlds...

*COLOR*: Let me repeat, COLOR! Starting with the June KNIFE WORLD, hot off the presses, we are adding several pages of FULL COLOR to each issue. This means that there will be some color editorial each month, and that full color advertising is now available to those who want to market their products to knife lovers in color, at a fraction of the price other publications charge. (Wait'll you see what an oversized full page ad looks like in color; they're practically the size of a small poster!)

What has NOT changed:

*SUBSCRIPTION RATES*: Surprise!! They HAVE NOT CHANGED one bit... as of right now, anyway. We're still waiting to see what the Postal Service is going to do to us when they announce the new rates for publications in July, but we're sure going to try to hold a year's subscription at the same $18.00/ 1 year (12 issues); 2 years @ $30.00 and 3 years @ $45.00 that it's been for several years now.

*CONTENT*: KNIFE WORLD is and will always remain KNIFE WORLD. Period. We're NOT going to sell out to advertising-driven content; we will continue to focus on the same content that has brought us these 29 & 10/12 years -- content that our SUBSCRIBERS want. That includes antique and other collectible knives, military knives, custom knifemakers from promising beginners to the established veterans, knife evaluations that are truly objective, and how-to articles that don't require investing a fortune in equipment. Much of what we publish can't be found anywhere else, and we take a lot of pride in that fact.

Enough pontificating. THANK YOU to our many subscribers for your continued support of what we do, and if you're a knife lover but don't currently receive a copy of KNIFE WORLD in the mail each month... well, why the heck not?

· New! " THE STANDARD KNIFE COLLECTORS GUIDE, 5th Edition " ________________________________________________________

By Ron Stewart and Roy Ritchie

Stewart and Ritchie's more general price guide focuses primarily on pocketknives, and includes almost 1500 illustrations - many in an expanded COLOR section. I'm very impressed with the usefulness of the new edition, particularly when it comes to the information and illustrations of blades, pocketknive patterns, and handle materials. A very good resource, especially for the beginner.

A detailed BOOK REVIEW is available on our website, just click on the link below.

Softcover, 752 pp., $16.95 (great value!) http://www.knifeworld.com/standardguide5th.html

KNIVES 2007, ERROR ALERT: For everyone who might have missed the last newsletter, an error has been discovered in KNIVES 2007, affecting the "State By State" Knifemaker listings (NOT the main listings). The publisher has graciously allowed us to post the corrected pages on the KNIFE WORLD website as a courtesy to our friends and customers. A PDF file containing the corrections can be found by clicking the link below, and scrolling towards the bottom of the page.

· now in the mail - the JUNE 2007 issue of "KNIFE WORLD" ____________________________________________________________

Did somebody say "color"?!?! :)

JUNE'S KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:

... "FRATERNAL POCKETKNIVES" by RICHARD WHITE A look at the knives of "Organizations, Orders & Secret Societies," with historical information on several of those more commonly encountered by collectors.

... "STEVE DUNN, MASTER OF TWO ART FORMS" by B.R. HUGHES Master Bladesmith and master engraver, this knifemaker does both equally well and his reputation speaks for itself. B.R. profiles the amiable Kentuckian, and aren't those color photos pretty?

... "SHARP & LOCKED OPEN Part 3" by MICHAEL BLACK Mike Black's third installment on current locking mechanisms for folding knives; what's available and how they work. This month's focus is on "Time Tested Mechanisms Too Varied to Categorize" -- such as those from Opinel, Marjacq, Meyerco, Lone Wolf, William Henry, Benchmade, and SOG. Interesting reading!

... "THE ALFRED M. SCHRADE KNIFE COLLECTION" By DOUG GROWITZ and JERRY SKELTON. A look at seven Schrade knives once owned by a relative of the family that operated the cutlery; observations on the knives and the owners' search for historical connections.

... "GOT MIL-K?" by FRANK TRZASKA We're all familiar with the stainless (or monel metal) handled four-bladed utility knife developed during WW II and produced for the armed forces ever since. Here's the story of how it came to be, with photos and descriptions of some of the earliest variations. An outstanding article on a well known but largely overlooked knife.

... "The LAMBERT TAITEKI" Field Trial by M. WILLSON OFFUTT Knifemaker Kirby Lambert's modern all-business interpretation of the traditional Japanese tanto is evaluated in the field, with excellent results.

... TONY BOSE KNIFE AUCTION TO BENEFIT NATIONAL KNIFE MUSEUM & ... KNIFE AUCTION TO BENEFIT AMERICAN BLADESMITH SOCIETY Two auctions to benefit great causes, both to be held at next month's Blade Show. Read about them here first -- maybe only here!

... "HISTORY OF POCKET CORKSCREWS AND POCKETKNIVES" (Book Review by corkscrew knife buff CLYDE SHOE)

As always, BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT contains the usual varied mix of things to evaluate and discuss, and a story or two as part of the package.

And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our handmade knife centerspread? For the first COLOR installation, we have JAY HENDRICKSON, DAVID GOLDBERG, RANDALL MARTIN, STEVE SKIFF, GAYLE BRADLEY, BILL RUPLE, GEORGE DAILEY, WESLEY DAVIS, JOHN HOLLEY, and SHAWN ELLIS, who got the full profile treatment in KNIFE WORLD exactly one year ago this month.

IRONS IN THE FIRE discusses the recent changes with our publication, and LETTERS TO THE EDITOR brings kudos on recent shows and corrections to a recent article. (Let no one accuse us of not trying to get new information out there, or of not setting the record straight when we might be wrong!) Our CLASSIFIEDS remain a great place to buy and sell knives, CLUB CORNER is the only current listing of knife related organizations in any publication, and Knife World still has the largest EVENTS CALENDAR anywhere -- we wouldn't want you to miss a nearby knife show, hammer-in, or other event, they're too much fun!

KNIFE WORLD truly is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES. We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!
