• now in the mail - the DECEMBER 2006 issue of "KNIFE WORLD" ____________________________________________________________

DECEMBER'S KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:

... "SECRET OPENING KNIVES, EXAMPLES WITH ROTATING HANDLES" by DOUG GROWITZ. An interesting article focusing on some very rare and unusual antique knives– those with mechanisms designed to fool the would-be opener!

... "BASIC KNIFE PHOTOGRAPHY" by yours truly Shooting quality photos of knives for whatever purpose you need (advertising, print, or the internet as examples) can be very difficult without some basic instruction. Here are some ideas that have worked for me, I think they'll work for you too!

... "EDGY EXPLANATIONS" by MICHAEL BLACK Too often, knife fans ignore the importance of edge geometry when evaluating edgeholding ability, or sharpening a knife for use. This enlightening article sheds a whole new light on the matter.

... "AKA the True V44" by FRANK TRZASKA We all know what the U.S. military's "V-44" knife looks like, right? Or do we? Frank Trzaska addresses one of knife collecting's more significant identification errors with this piece on a simple Case wood handled machete of WWII.

... "The SOG Scuba/Demo" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT Sure it boasts handsome good looks, and a healthy price tag. But can this bad boy really do the job as advertised? Our man in the field finds out...

... "UNITED CUTlERY FILES CHAPTER 11" Yet another major American cutlery firm finds itself locked in a struggle to survive... at least the Camillus strike is over (see below).

... "MORE ON NATIONAL KNIFE MUSEUM OPENING" It's just one week away now, folks -- NOVEMBER 29th, 10 AM at Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville, Tennessee. See you there, and don't forget to take in Parkers' nearby Pigeon Forge Knife Show on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday!

... "KNIVES 2006" (Book Review) by MAC OVERTON

BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT covers exotic display multiblades, exotic personal multiblades, a really unusual "letter bag knife", and a couple of J.A. Henckels bowie or hunting style knives. As always, a veried mix of things to evaluate and discuss, and a a story or two as part of the mix.

And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our handmade knife centerspread? This month features JOHN SMITH, THOMAS HASLINGER, PAUL JARVIS, CHARLIE DAKE, SHANE TAYLOR, RALPH RICHARDS, ED BAUMGARDNER, CLIFF PARKER, and JAY HENDRICKSON, who in addition to his responsibilities with the American Bladesmith Society, the Knifemakers Guild, and the group establishing a museum in honor of the late William F. "Bill" Moran Jr., continues to turn out a few VERY fine knives. Hats off to Jay and Nancy, for all they are doing for the rest of us... we appreciate you!

IRONS IN THE FIRE offers thanks to all those who have helped to make the new museum a reality, and LETTERS TO THE EDITOR brings comments on recent articles and editorials. See our exclusive CLUB CORNER for information on all the knife clubs across this country (plus a couple of foreign clubs for good measure). And don't forget the CLASSIFIEDS and the biggest knife related EVENTS CALENDAR anywhere.

KNIFE WORLD truly is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES. We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS ________________________________________________

As mentioned above, the Camillus Cutlery Co. strike has finally ended, with the workers accepting the contract offer first rejected back in May. Only 15 of the 78 workers will return to their jobs at an ailing company hurt even more by the strike, which will probably be sourcing most of their knives from overseas in the future. From this perspective, it appears that both sides have lost.

Tough times for the American knife industry -- let's not forget them on our holiday wish lists...
