• KNIFE BOOK NEWS -- LOTS TO REPORT! ________________________________________________________

REVISED & UPDATED: We've just received the second printing of our very popular book SHARPENING MADE EASY -- new cover, updated contact information, and a few other updates. If you haven't taken a look at SME just yet, be sure to do so. We think it's the BEST book out there on sharpening, and it's hard to argue with the $9.95 price tag. http://www.knifeworld.com/sharmadeas.html

COMING SOON: Our U.S. MILITARY KNIVES, BAYONETS,AND MACHETES PRICE GUIDE. We're changing the format of the new 5th edition to make it more pocketable & portable, and indexing three more knife books in addition to those already referenced in previous editions. Look for it late this month or early in January!

GOING SOON: SILVER FOLDING FRUIT KNIVES, Bill Karsten's classic booklet about the intricate little beauties, has been in print for almost 20 years, but the SIX copies we have on the shelf are all that are left. When they're gone, they're gone, folks -- so act quickly if you want one. Perhaps someday we'll look into updating it, but nothing is currently in the works. http://www.knifeworld.com/silfolfruitk.html

GONE: We've completely sold out of our limited stock of "George Schrade and his Accomplishments to the Knife Industry" by George M. Schrade.

ALSO ON THE HORIZON: There are several other book projects underway, which we will be reporting on as soon as they get a little closer to publication. One that should be arriving in the next couple of months is Arni Dunathan's exhaustive book on MARBLE'S knives and axes. We've had a sneak peek, and we'll have them as soon as they come out, folks. Watch this space!

• KNIFE WORLD'S "SAVE A LIFE WITH A KNIFE" Program ________________________________________________

In the December issue, we highlighted our "SAVE A LIFE WITH A KNIFE" program that has been ongoing since February of last year. This project has provided a means for individuals to donate practical using knives to our troops in Iraq, and donate you have! We've shipped hundreds of knives to our fighting men and women since that time, and we're not done just yet.

If you too are interested in donating a good working knife, or three dozen of them, you can mail them directly to our offices and we'll make sure they get into the proper hands. Small sharpeners are also welcome, as are good quality used, broken, dirty, or dull knives that are in need of some refurbishing (subscriber Bryan O'Shaughnessy has volunteered to fix these up before shipment -- thanks Bryan!)

For more information on how you can participate in this effort, email me at knifepub@knifeworld.com.

• now in the mail - the DECEMBER 2005 issue of "KNIFE WORLD" ____________________________________________________________

December's KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:

... "THE SWISS ARMY SOLDIERKNIFE" by DAN JACQUART Written by the president of the the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife Society, this is the most detailed article ever on the development of the original "Swiss Army" knife, with much information on identification and collector variations. Where else could you find an article like this??

... "JIM BEHRING OF TREEMAN KNIVES" by DOC WACHOLZ Knifemaker, collector, and dealer are all words that describe Michigan's Jim Behring – and he's a heck of a nice guy to boot. This superbly done profile by Doc Wacholz (a fine knifemaker in his own right) is something that everyone will enjoy.

... "THE USMC 1219C2 OF WW II (Part One)" by FRANK TRZASKA If "1219C2" doesn't ring a bell, how about "K-Bar"? [Oh yeah, that one!] Our military knife wizard examines the evolution and variations of this all-time military classic in great detail -- and being one of his collecting specialties, he oughta know. Part Two of this piece will appear in the January issue of KNIFE WORLD.

... "LAMINATED BLADE KNIVES" by MICHAEL BLACK An fine overview of laminated blades, with a special focus on currently available production knives that offer this unique feature.

... "EMERSON'S HARD WEAR KNIVES" by BOB CAMPBELL A look at Ernest Emerson's latest venture – inexpensive production versions of his poular benchmade knives, for those of us on a budget.

... "SOG GOV-TAC" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT Sort of a modern, high tech version of the 1219C2, this SOG fixed blade is subjected to the "Field Trial" workout. You'll have to read the issue to see how it did!

... "SAVE A LIFE WITH A KNIFE, 2005" An update on KNIFE WORLD's program to put good, practical knives in the hands of our fighting men and women in Iraq -- fueled by your knife donations.

... a detailed review of "KNIVES 2006" by MAC OVERTON Everything you'd want to know about the industry's annual guide.

As always, BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT features another interesting assortment of oddities to perplex and delight... but my fingers are too tired to relate all the details. Be sure to have a look when your issue arrives!

IRONS IN THE FIRE wonders about holiday and collector "wishes", and LETTERS TO THE EDITOR contains quite a lot of feedback on recent articles (we must be doing something right!) Of course there's also our exclusive CLUB CORNER (free listings for all nonprofit knife collecting and knifemaking organizations), the CLASSIFIEDS, and the biggest knife related EVENTS CALENDAR anywhere (and we do mean ANYWHERE).

KNIFE WORLD really is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES. We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!

• what about the NOVEMBER 2005 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"?? ____________________________________________________________

Heck no, we didn't skip one... just too busy taking your book orders and subscriptions to send out an Online Newsletter last month! Anyway, without further ado, here's what you saw -- or missed -- in the November issue:

We don't do many themed issues, but the November theme was CASE!

... "CASE'S PRE-DOTTED 54 PATTERN" by GARY MOORE A detailed expose of the evolution of Case's fabled trapper pattern, from its beginnings in the Tested era up through the USA era. [If that's Greek to you, "Case"= W.R. Case & Sons; "54"= Trapper pattern, "Tested"= 1920-1940 era and "USA"= 1965-1969 era. It's all explained in the article...] One of the best articles ever written about collecting a particular Case pattern.

... "LITTLE VALLEY - THE VILLAGE OF KNIVES" by BRAD LOCKWOOD An excerpt from the new book "TESTED XX - THE CASE CUTLERY DYNASTY", discussing the cutlery scene in Little Valley, NY circa 1900. Beautifully written, with some excellent historical photographs of the Case family.

... "CASE SLIMLOCK and CHRIS REEVE MNANDI" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT Our "Field Trial" man contrasts and compares two first-rate factory folders of the "gentleman's knife" variety. He found much to like about both...

... "CLEANING OLD KNIVES" by RUDY SUTHERLAND How to do it, with a minimum of equipment and an eye towards preservation. A great contribution that has generated a lot of feedback from our readers.

... "THE EOD TOOL KIT KNIFE" by FRANK TRZASKA Military knife authority Trzaska examines what looks like a steak knife with a copper blade... but it's really beryllium copper, made for Explosive Ordnance Disposal units - the military's "bomb squad." Just when you thought you'd seen it all...

... "IN CLYDE'S FOOTSTEPS" by B.R. HUGHES SAMMIE FISCHER is the son of the late CLYDE FISCHER, one of knifemaking's most beloved characters. Sammie grew up helping his father around the shop, and lately has found his way back to knifemaking. Another great story from Mr. Hughes, a legend in his own right.

... "NATIONAL KNIFE MUSEUM UPDATE" by Knife World Staff (i.e. myself) The new NKCA Museum project is coming along nicely, and everywhere we go we are asked about it. What will it be like? When will it open? The details are still coming together, but we're committed to keeping you informed as the Museum takes shape.

... and also BOOK REVIEWS of TESTED XX - THE CASE CUTLERY DYNASTY MANUAL OF THE BARATERO (19th century Spanish text on knife fighting!)
