foremost authorities in Mike Silvey, Gary Boyd, and Frank Trzaska.
We've also added three more knife books to those indexed, for a

• " BLADE'S GUIDE TO KNIVES AND THEIR VALUES " -- NEW!
________________________________________________________
Edited by Steve Shackleford
This used to be "LEVINE'S GUIDE", now it isn't. Maybe it's not
everything it could be, but in many regards it's still the best
available book of its kind, and the prices are current -- so we're
recommending it. (For the "Long Version" of the "Blade's Guide"
story, visit its page on our website below).
Softcover, 576 pp., $29.95

After having been damaged some time ago, the online KNIFE WORLD
Knifemaker Indexes have been repaired and updated through the
February 2006 issue. These indexes list every knifemaker profile
we've run in the past almost-30 years, as well as other knifemaker
specific articles such as knife tests and that sort of thing.
It does not include group profiles and the like. A very handy
resource for you handmade knife buffs, it can save a lot of
time in researching a particular maker. (This editor uses it a LOT!)
http://www.knifeworld.com/thisandthat1.html
Also, more detail has been added to the "BLADE'S GUIDE TO KNIVES
AND THEIR VALUES" page (see above), so that website visitors can
understand how the "Blade's Guide" book evolved and its advantages
and disadvantages.

• KNIFE BOOK NEWS
________________________________________________________
There are quite a few things happening in the way of knife books
right now... the long awaited Marble's book by Arni Dunathan should
be here soon, though being in the publishing business ourselves we're
not counting any chickens before they hatch (or guessing precisely
when they might hatch). Last I heard, it was supposed to have been
here three weeks ago, but that's the way book publishing goes!
Also, Bob Hunt's latest book on Randalls has been delayed but should
be here in the next couple of months. Notice a trend here? ;)
On this end, this year we've become VERY frustrated with the
inability of various publishers to deliver books in a reasonable
amount of time. One publisher moved, but didn't tell anyone or respond
to our phone messages for almost a month; another seems to have
vanished without a trace (with a basement full of unsold books),
and a publisher of several books simultaneously allowed themselves
to run out of three different titles that have all been in print for
years... just not paying attention, I guess(!?!) So, if you have
ordered something from us and experienced some of these problems,
rest assured that you're not alone -- and believe me, it's not
possible for you to be as angry about it as I am!
Ever have the feeling that you're marooned on Idiot Island???
Sigh...

• now in the mail - the MAY 2006 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"
____________________________________________________________
May's KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:
... "FOSTER BROTHERS & CHATILLON KNIVES" by RICHARD WHITE
This piece helps to clear up some of the mystery surrounding these
two little-understood brands, one famous for butcher knives and the
other sometimes seen on military pieces, and less often on pocketknives.
... "LYLE BRUNCKHORST, EVOLUTION OF A CRAFTSMAN" by SYNE MITCHELL
A long overdue profile on a Northwest knifemaking legend. An
accomplished writer in other venues, this is Ms. Mitchell's first
contribution to Knife World.
... "NORTHWOODS' SCAGEL REPRODUCTIONS" by MICHAEL BLACK
Northwoods Knife Co's line of Scagel reproductions has finally
brought the price of a Scagel style knife within reach of anyone,
and Mr. Black's evaluation of their looks and performance may
surprise you.
... "THE SOUTH AND THE BOWIE KNIFE THROUGH BRITISH EYES"
by WILLARD HOGEBOOM. A well researched piece on 19th century
British travelers' published thoughts about the American custom
of carrying - and using - bowie knives. Interesting reading!
... "THE ENGINEERS MACHETE" by FRANK TRZASKA
A close look at a misunderstood military collectible, which includes
for the first time identification of the unmarked examples! Another
reason that Knife World subscription is more than worth the price,
you won't find this info anywhere else...
... KNIFE NEWS provides detailed information about two upcoming
auctions benefeiting the ABS and the NKCA, both of which should prove
very attractive to lovers of BILL MORAN and TONY & REESE BOSE knives.
As always, BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT features another interesting
assortment of oddities to perplex and delight... included this month
are a variety of unusual paper knives, including one by N.P. Ames of
the AMES MFG. CO. (that should pique some interests), a suspicious
OVB / HIBBARD SPENCER BARTLETT lockback, an unusual and rare
BEAVER FALLS table knife, and an unusual fruit knife by ALBERT COLES
of New York.
And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our handmade knife centerspread?
This month features CHARLES STOUT, JURGEN STEINAU, DON COWLES /
JIM SMALL, LOYD MCCONNELL, T.C. ROBERTS, JOHN YOUNG, SCOTT SAWBY /
SIMON LYTTON, LOYD PENDLETON, RICARDO VELARDE, and that ever-colorful
master of mosaic damascus, STEVE SCHWARZER.
IRONS IN THE FIRE ponders the variety of Jacks one might encounter
at a knife show (with at least one Bill thrown in for good measure),
and LETTERS TO THE EDITOR revisits preserving the future of knife
collecting, Western Midgets, and one reader reports on an "Ike Knife"
in his possession (neat!!). Of course there's also our exclusive
CLUB CORNER (free listings for all nonprofit knife collecting and
knifemaking organizations), the CLASSIFIEDS, and the biggest knife
related EVENTS CALENDAR anywhere (and we do mean ANYWHERE).
KNIFE WORLD really is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES.
We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!

• what about the APRIL 2006 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"??
____________________________________________________________
I've been traveling a lot lately with all of the spring shows, and a
variety of other things have ganged up on me too... thus no
"newsletters" for the past couple of months. Sorry! Anyway, here's a
quick look at the April issue...
... "THREE FACES OF THE WILZIN" by DOUG & DEBBIE GROWITZ
A great first contribution from Mr. Growitz, detailing the evolution
of the Wilzin Automatic knife and showing a couple of extremely rare
variations. We have had some great feedback on this one...
... "A FAMILY AFFAIR" by B.R. HUGHES
A profile of father & son knifemaking duo Clifton and Rusty Polk,
which also makes not of Rusty's sons Ethan and Evan -- looks like a
trend to me!
... "WESTERN'S MIDGETS" by Richard White
An investigation into the miniature fixed blade knives turned out
by Western Cutlery -- some uncommon and relatively unknown
collectibles.
... "THE EK COMMANDO KNIFE" by BOB CAMPBELL
A look at the current products of the Ek Commando Knife Co., as well
as the fighting knives of the firm's storied past.
... "THE M7 BAYONET" by DAVID DOYLE
A frequent contributor to military publications, Mr. Doyle's
overview of the often seen but little understood M7 makes for a useful
reference.
... "THE ANGEL SWORD SKY MARSHALL" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT
Mr. Offutt's Field Trial tests out a big, sturdy knife from Texas.
Is it worth the almost-$700 price tag? You'll have to read it to
find out...
... finally, A TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM F. MORAN, JR.
A knifemaking legend leaves our midst...

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS
________________________________________________
Im headed off to the NKCA Shepherdsville (Louisville) Knife Show
this weekend, and will also make an appearance at the annual
Wolverine Knife Show near Detroit next weekend. It's sure been a
busy spring, with lots of shows and other events, and unfortunately
lots of conflicts that prevent folks like you and I from attending
everything we'd like to. I understand that they can't all be avoided,
them, but I sure do wish that promoters would take conflicts into more
consideration in their planning...
Enjoy your spring - and if there's a knife event within striking
distance this weekend, why not check it out? Just get out your
KNIFE WORLD for the most complete list of knife events anywhere!
