• " BEST OF KNIFE WORLD VOL. III “ - Sale on Damaged Books
________________________________________________________
THE BEST OF KNIFE WORLD VOL. III is pretty much a self-explanatory
title - this book is a collection of more than 70 of the best articles
published in KNIFE WORLD magazine between 1983 and 1991 -- 310 pages'
worth, conveniently bound and printed on good quality paper stock.
We are just now getting down to the bottom of our stock, and have
discovered that due to some, er... poor planning on the part of the
book's printers and ourselves, some of the books at the bottom of the
stack are a little 'squished.' What I mean is that the bindings are
fine, the printing is fine, everything is fine except that they're a
little "wavy" when you lay them flat on a table. But squeeze them in
with the books on your bookshelf a while and they'll probably be a-OK.
The bottom line is that we've still got nice flat copies for $13.95
each, and now offer the 'squished' but otherwise nice ones for $9.95
each -- but don't have large quantities of either. If you enjoy
KNIFE WORLD each month, or even if you don't but are interested in
what we do best, this book will provide you with hours of reading
pleasure at a very reasonable price.

• " BRITISH & COMMONWEALTH MILITARY KNIVES “ - SALE!
________________________________________________________
If ever there was a GREAT knife book that has not gotten its due,
it must be Ron Flook's BRITISH & COMMONWEALTH MILITARY KNIVES.
This book is an absolutely essential reference on the subject, and
everyone with the slightest interest in military knives of
Great Britain, Canada, India, Australia, and New Zealand ought to
have a copy. Though worth every penny of the $49.95 retail, the
publisher has temporarily dropped the price and we are following
suit: $24.95, for as long as their sale lasts.

• " RANDALL MADE KNIVES - A TIMELINE “
________________________________________________________
In the list online newsletter I mentioned that we had picked up this
very useful 12x25" two-sided laminated reference sheet that folds
neatly into a back pants pocket, and allows you to date any given
Randall knife with a good degree of confidence, wherever you need it.
A superb, handy resource for all Randall fans.

*ON THE WAY OUT?:
Eugene Blankenship's reprint of Adrian Harris' classic KNIFE REPAIR
AND RESTORATION has taken some interesting twists and turns over
the past few months, and while it just became available back in
December the supplies may be drying up very soon. Basically all
but the books we have in stock were sold to a single source back in
June -- not a large quantity at that, and there would appear to be
some copyright issues looming in that book's future so I wouldn't
count on another reprint until it actually appears. We don't have
too many at this stage, but we have enough to satisfy your wants now
if you like. Next month, no promises!

*ALL THAT'S LEFT OF THESE: ("Order now or forever hold your peace!")
THE RAZOR ANTHOLOGY by various Knife World contributors
-- SIX copies
AMERICAN PREMIUM GUIDE TO KNIVES & RAZORS 5th EDITION by Jim Sargent
-- (the new 6th edition doesn't include Robeson and Winchester in
favor of expanded Case and Queen sections - this does!)
-- THREE copies
THE SKINNING KNIFE by M.H. Cole
-- FOUR copies
JAMES BOWIE AND THE SANDBAR FIGHT by Dr. James Batson
-- EIGHT copies
*** NO ONLINE ORDERS on these titles - Call 1-800-828-7751 or

*COMING SOON:
For the many who have inquired about our U.S. Military Knives,
Bayonets, and Machetes Price Guide, out of print for over a year --
a new 5th edition is now in the middle stages of coming together.
It will feature an all-new, more portable format and indexes for even
more of your reference books. We anticipate having them available in
time for the holiday rush. Watch this space for more updates in the
near future. I can't wait!!!

• OUT OF PRINT BOOKS
________________________________________________
Just updated our list of Out of Print Books on the website, and
noticed that we have a fair number of hard to find old knife catalog
reprints available. It used to be that the only people who bought
these were collectors of the brand covered, but over the last several
years knifemakers have discovered that the catalog illustrations make
superb scale patterns for their use - and even if the drawings aren't
full size, a computer with scanner and printer will make them
whatever size you want. Jumbo peanuts! Miniature sunfish! The world
is your oyster! (Well, something like that...)
These are the reprints that jumped out at me:
Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. (the old Dewey Ferguson reprint, different
year and different knives than the color reprint we sell)
Greer & Laing 1914 (lots of BOKER knives)
Keen Kutter - E.C. Simmons 1930
Novelty Knife Co. Catalogue No. 1
OVB - Hibbard Spencer Bartlett 1933
Remington C-5 (1925)
Remington C-30 (1930)
Voss Cutlery Co. (lots of Hen & Rooster knives, 1950s)

• now in the mail - the AUGUST 2005 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"
____________________________________________________________
August's KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:
... "THE HUMBLE HARNESS JACK" by CHARLIE CAMPAGNA
Charlie's collection of harness jacks is second to none, and this
article is a great introduction to an all-but-forgotten specialized
jack pattern. Some superb knives illustrated!
... "FROM BAYONET TO MULTI-TOOL" by DAVID STEELE
A look at the cutlery needs of our soldiers, and how those needs
have evolved over the years, with some very useful thoughts on
donating really practical items to our fighting men and women.
... "THE A.B.S. IN 2005" by B.R. HUGHES
A review of the American Bladesmith Society's annual gathering at
the Blade Show, complete with reports on show awards, new stamps, the
cutting contest, and everything else you might want to know.
... "THE M1939 MACHETE" by FRANK TRZASKA
Our military authority extraordinaire takes a look at the Model 1939
machete -- how it came to be, its variations and thoughts on collecting.
... "THE LAKOTA LEGEND Model 911" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT III
In this month's Field Trial, Offutt tests an offering from Lakota
that's a step apart from the offerings of old. This folder is sleek
and functional, and cheaper than the offerings from some of its
competitors.
... "NATIONAL KNIFE MUSEUM UPDATE" by KW STAFF
The new museum at Smoky Mountain Knife Works is coming along nicely.
Here's an update, complete with floor plan and construction photos!
...plus, there's a short note on a proposed British ban on pointy
kitchen knives. Yes, folks, you read that right...
BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT is filled in an interesting assortment
of items this month: more on WWII fighting knives made from old
fencing foils (with authenticated OSS connections), a strange
"U.S. GOV'T" multiblade with very unusual blades, two of the
weirdest JOSEPH RODGERS knives that you'll probably ever see,
a Chinese "butterfly knife" turned into a so-called "D-guard bowie,"
a dagger with a very unusual blade profile, a German or Austrian
fixed blade knife with bowie tendencies, and a German folder with
gut hook blade.
IRONS IN THE FIRE rambles aimlessly about "Oiling the Joints," while
ARTISTRY IN KNIVES features the handcrafted creations of DAN WINKLER,
MIKE SALOIS, JERRY PAUL, BOB LAY, DUSTY MOULTON, SHANE TAYLOR,
ED BAUMGARDNER, TODD KOPP, MACE VITALE and TIM HANCOCK. Of course
there's also LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, our exclusive CLUB CORNER
(free listings for all nonprofit knife collecting and knifemaking
organizations), the CLASSIFIEDS, and the biggest knife related
EVENTS CALENDAR anywhere (and we do mean ANYWHERE).
KNIFE WORLD truly is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES.
http://www.knifeworld.com/knifwormag.htm
While we're at it, how about a quickie listing of articles from the
JULY KNIFE WORLD? Wouldn't want to ignore all the good stuff there...
JULY's KNIFE WORLD contained the following feature articles:
... "BUHL SONS CO. HARDWARE" by PAT DONOVAN
One of our favorite Michiganders, Pat's article presents
the history of Detroit's Buhl Hardware and their cutlery items, all
the way up to their connection to former Indycar driver Robbie Buhl.
(The editor loves articles like this!)
... "THE WWII M2 PARATROOPER KNIFE" by B.K. BROOKS
Mr. Brooks is awarded an "E" for effort on this article that does
a fine job of sorting out the tangled web of what is and is not a
genuine, issued, paratrooper switchblade knife from World War II.
Collectors will be referencing this article for years!
... "TITANIUM FOR KNIFE BLADES?" by PAT CASCIO
Mission Knives & Tools makes it their speciality, and Pat's
speciality is field testing! You'll have to read the article to
find out the results...
... "THE FIRST KNIFE" by BOB CAMPBELL
Advice on selecting a child's first knife, and teaching them how
to use it.
... "TWO OF OUR OLDEST UNITE" by BRAD LOCKWOOD
Author of the soon-to-be-released CASE CUTLERY DYNASTY, Brad
penned this article on First Nations Knives and their partnership
with Burrell Cutlery, the last cutlery firm still run by Case family
descendants.
... "KNIFEMAKER JODY MULLER" by MAC OVERTON
This ABS Journeyman Smith has developed a style all his own, as
well as a following. We thought he deserved a profile, and here it is.

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS

Although the number of "Online Newsletter" readers has continued to
grow (almost 7000 of you this time around), more and more folks are
finding these mailings in their SPAM filter, or having them bounced
out automatically (and if we get a bounce, we remove the address
right away). It's starting to look like we might have to post these
Newsletters on the KNIFE WORLD website in order to provide everyone
the opportunity to see them. So, a question for you folks: Would you
bother checking the website for these updates if you couldn't receive
them with your email? Let me know your thoughts at the address below.
Not as many knows during the summer months, but several dot the
schedule in July and August and are worth checking out. This
weekend's highlight is the Queen Cutlery Collectors show held in
Queen's hometown of Titusville, PA - as friendly an atmosphere as
you'll find at any show. Next weekend brings Chris Carlson's
Central Taxas show to Austin, which is really developing a good
reputation, as well as another NCCA show in Marlboro, MA.
The big one in August is the Knifemakers Guild show in Orlando,
the first weekend of the month. KNIFE WORLD will be set up there
with two tables' worth of books for the first time in a long while,
so be sure to stop by and say "hello" if you're coming to partake
of the custom jewels on display. Also in August: the Central KY
show in Lexington, the Tar Heel show in Winston-Salem, NC
(their 30th year - congratulations, guys and gals!), the PKA Custom
Knife Show in Denver, a don't-miss ABS hammer-in in Troy, OH, and
California's Bay Area knife show. For details on these and all the
other upcoming knife shows, check out page 36 of your August
KNIFE WORLD.
Have a great summer, everyone!
