• " KNIFE REPAIR & RESTORATION “ - New! ________________________________________________

A modern reprint of the how-to classic, highly recommended to anyone interested in making or repairing folding knives. For those of you that aren't familiar with the author, Adrian Harris is better known to the knife world as “Colonel Coon” - maker of a very popular line of collectable knives in the 1970s and 1980s. Harris was also Schrade's factory repairman for a time.

If you already have Ben Kelley's book on repair, this makes a great companion. The two restoration experts solve problems in different ways and it's beneficial to study both approaches. Each book also presents some material not covered in the other. Both are highly recommended.

Softcover, 70 pp. http://www.knifeworld.com/knifeworld/kniferepair-resto.html

(For more on the Ben Kelley book, click the link above and follow it from there.)

• " BAYONETS - AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY “ - New! ________________________________________________

This brand new, full-color book on bayonets of the world is sure to be a crowd pleaser, considering the number of copies of “Bayonets from Janzen’s Notebook” that we sell each year. The new book appears to be a better basic introduction to the subject than Janzen's – not as comprehensive, but something you'll want to curl up to and read. Plus, the color photos make it a whole lot prettier...

Watch for a full review coming soon.

• OUT OF PRINT BOOKS ________________________________________________

NEW THIS MONTH: a large assortment of rare catalog reprints, including REMINGTON, CASE BROS, MARBLES, UNION CUT CO, and that sort of thing. Oh, and for you custom knife buffs, a copy of the VERY rare JACK HOLIFIELD COLLECTION auction catalog, done by Sotheby's in 1978 (some awesome early customs therein).

WHEW! A lot of that last big batch of out of print knife books has already been sold, but we do still have some of them, like MARBLE’S KNIVES & AXES, AN INTRODUCTION TO SWITCHBLADE KNIVES by MYERS, SHEFFIELD EXHIBITION KNIVES, STRAIGHT RAZOR COLLECTING by DOYLE and a few other zingers. When they're gone, they're gone, and I don't expect to see another copy of some titles for quite a while.

• now in the mail - the FEBRUARY '05 issue of "KNIFE WORLD" ____________________________________________________________

February's KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:

... "COLCLESSER: A HISTORY FORGED IN STEEL" by DANNY ROBINSON The superbly researched history of a very important, albeit forgotten, early American manufacturer of outdoors knives. Believe me when I say that this is exactly the type of article that inspires collectors and affects the collector market considerably, and the author has done a fine bit of work here.

... "MEL PARDUE - STUDENT & TEACHER" by LOWELL BRAY Our favorite judge (Bray) presents some insights into a master of custom folding knives, a gentleman universally well liked and respected by his peers. This editor thinks it's worthwhile to profile a legend once in a while, and Mr. Pardue certainly qualifies.

... "MULTIBLADES - A CLOSER LOOK" by ROY HUMENICK Mr. Humenick is himself a maker of folding knives, particularly of the multiblade variety -- and here he gives us a look at what goes into the making of one of today's handmade multiblade folders. They're like what your grandfather carried, only better!

... "CAMILLUS' CAM1-A1 BAYONET" by FRANK TRZASKA The U.S. military's newest bayonet - still not ready for issue - is revealed to all through Mr. Trzaska's latest contribution. And we're not talking about a couple of photos and a description here, but the whole raison d'etre and even insight into prototype variations and such. You'll get that nowhere else!

... "VERDIGRIS" by DENNIS ELLINGSEN "YUCK!" sez ibdennis and Dear Elayne... but there is a lot more to the story about that green stuff that forms when brass makes contact with leather, as it's probably doing in your knife drawer right now. Enquiring minds want to know, so Mr. Ellingsen has the full scoop for us on what it is, how to clean it up and how to prevent it from forming again.

... "SOG SEAL KNIFE 2000" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT In the latest FIELD TRIAL installment, we put SOG's high tech SEAL knife to the test. How did it perform?? Well, you'll just have to read your KNIFE WORLD to find out...

... "SAVE A LIFE WITH A KNIFE, 2005" by KW Staff A KNIFE WORLD reader tries to help out our troops by donating some knives... and fails. But we've got connections(!), and now you too can send a knife (or a boxful) to our overseas troops, who might find them useful additions to their issued gear. The full scoop is on p.12 of the issue, but any Online Newsletter readers who'd like to help can email knifepub@knifeworld.com and we'll tell you how to participate.

plus ...

REVIEWS of the new reprint of Adrian Harris' book “KNIFE REPAIR & RESTORATION” and Sheldon & Edna Wickersham's “RANDALL MADE KNIVES TIMELINE - QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE"

BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT addresses an interesting CASE family related knife, a CASE spatula (of all things), a CHARLES CONGREVE table knife, a KA-BAR hobo set, a tortoiseshell handled Bohemian multiblade, and further forays into UTICA KNIFE & RAZOR. Hmmm...

This month's ARTISTRY IN KNIVES lotto winners include knives by ART TYCER, WALLY HAYES, JOHN BARTLOW, RALPH DEWEY HARRIS, GAIL LUNN, JOHN YOUNG, KENNETH KING, RICHARD ROGERS, JERRY RADOS, and RAINY VALLOTTON.

IRONS IN THE FIRE covers a topic of some importance this month, at least to those of you buying knives online -- how to protect yourself from INTERNET FRAUD. We know a lot of folks who have been stung lately, and if you buy knives online you'll want to investigate. (Gee, that $18.00 subscription seems pretty cheap versus being trapped by one little scam...)

... and of course there's LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. our exclusive CLUB CORNER (free listings for all nonprofit knife collecting and knifemaking organizations), the CLASSIFIEDS, and the biggest knife related EVENTS CALENDAR anywhere and we do mean ANYWHERE.

...you know, I almost got an Online Newsletter out last month, but it just didn't happen... too much going on. So, if you're waiting on something from me, rest assured that you're not alone...

January's KNIFE WORLD contained the following articles:

... "JOHN PRIMBLE & BELKNAP HARDWARE" by LEROY ROARK The history of one of our most fabled hardware establishments, their brand names, and the knives they produced. There are some real beauties illustrated!

... "THE POST-WAR COMBAT MARK 2" by FRANK TRZASKA Our military knife bodhisattva (a tip of the hat to Mr. Brooks for that title) puts forth an epic study on the famous Mark 2 ("Ka-Bar") knife in all of its many post-WWII forms - issue AND commercial. Great golly, there are a slew of them!

... "A RAZOR REVIVAL" by RICHARD WHITE Straight razors have been pegged for three decades as the hot collectible to watch. Are they finally ready to catch fire? Mr. White thinks so, and explains why.

... "WHAT'S THIS KNIFE WORTH?" by B.R. HUGHES The custom knife writer who's seen it all offers us his thoughts on collecting handmade knives as an investment - a must read for everyone interested in the financial aspects of collecting (and who isn't?)

... "ASSISTED OPENING KNIVES TODAY" by PAT CASCIO This Oregonian fresh to our pages reports on assisted openers in general and three producers in particular, including information on legality and interpretation.

plus ...

KNIFE NEWS on CASE (with Ruger!) and a seafaring AG RUSSELL knife.

...and a BOOK REVIEW of the spankin' new JIM SARGENT book “AMERICAN PREMIUM GUIDE TO KNIVES & RAZORS, 6th EDITION”

... and of course the usual columns & etc. You know them by now, right?

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS ________________________________________________

Those of you with a sharp eye might notice that the quality of the photos in the February issue has been taken up a notch... the miracles of modern technology at work! Now, while were on the general topic, don't anyone ask if we're going to printing in color anytime soon... paying for color printing requires lots of advertising dollars, and to generate advertising dollars we'd have to cater our content more towards our advertisers rather than our readers. In other words, articles on Colclesser, Primble, and most other old knives would be gone (no advertising dollars there), the military articles would be out (the government doesn't need to advertise its knives), and we'd have to sanitize our FIELD TRIALS (and other articles on modern knives) so as not to offend anyone advertising with us, or considering same.

But that's not going to happen. For over 27 years there's been room for a publication like ours, and we're not about to stop now.

If you're not familiar with KNIFE WORLD -- we're different. And if you have an interest in old or antique knives, in military knives, or in to-the-point knife commentary... well, you owe it to yourself to investigate who we are and what we do.

Skeptical? How about if we make it easy for you? Try our three-month FREE trial subscription described at the bottom of this email. [We'll take our chances... our renewal rate from trial subscriptions is higher than the industry average for *paid* subscriptions!]

** Questions or comments? Letters to the KNIFE WORLD editor? ** Send them along to "knifepub@knifeworld.com". We'd love to hear from you!
