• " THE FIRST COMMANDO KNIVES" --- BACK IN STOCK
________________________________________________________
by Prof. Kelly Yeaton, LTC Samuel L. Yeaton and Col. Rex Applegate
We used to sell this title some years back, and have picked it up
again to see if it's still in demand. It covers the evolution of the
Fairbairn-Sykes commando dagger from the first toolroom prototypes in
Shanghai to the wartime F-S and USMC Raider knives and, ultimately,
modern variations designed by Applegate (ties in nicely with the
article in the September KNIFE WORLD - see below). A nice little book
with some information found nowhere else.
Softcover, 115 pp.

• " BRITISH & COMMONWEALTH MILITARY KNIVES “ - SALE!
________________________________________________________
If ever there was a GREAT knife book that has not gotten its due,
it must be Ron Flook's BRITISH & COMMONWEALTH MILITARY KNIVES.
This book is an absolutely essential reference on the subject, and
everyone with the slightest interest in military knives of
Great Britain, Canada, India, Australia, and New Zealand ought to
have a copy. Though worth every penny of the $49.95 retail, the
publisher has temporarily dropped the price and we are following
suit: $24.95, for as long as their sale lasts.

Last month, we discussed the possibility of posting these newsletters
on the KNIFE WORLD website for those who have their SPAM filter
cranked up so high that these just aren't getting through. That
includes a lot of folks (but probably not you, if you're reading this).
We're going to try this out and see if it's worth doing, so if you're
NOT reading this, go directly to our website at
http://www.knifeworld.com/backnewsletters.html to see the last few
online newsletters (#'s 49-53 presently posted). [If you're reading
this you can have a look-see as well... just bear with the editor
and his offbeat sense of humor.]

• now in the mail - the SEPTEMBER 2005 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"
____________________________________________________________
August's KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:
... "APPLEGATE-FAIRBAIRN; AN ALL AMERICAN FIGHTING KNIFE" by
SHELDON & EDNA WICKERSHAM... a suberb article investigating the
origins and collectible variations of one of the world's most famous
fighting knives. Don't miss this one!
... "KEVIN HOFFMAN - ARTIST/KNIFEMAKER" by LOWELL BRAY
Here's a profile of a Knifemakers Guild member with a serious
artistic background, who has very quietly racked up a lot of years
of experience and a strong following in the collecting community.
... "THE BEST ALL 'ROUND CARRY KNIFE" by RALPH HURNE
A thought-provoking piece on the practicality of smaller fixed
blades for defensive purposes, based largely on the popularity of
small bowies in the Victorian era.
... "THE KRAG MODEL OF 1902 BOLO BAYONET" by FRANK TRZASKA
This very rare bayonet finds proper coverage in this article by
our military knife correspondent, complete with information designed
to protect you from the counterfeits lurking out there. Caveat emptor!
... "MANN'S HUDSON BAY KNIFE" by BOB CAMPBELL
Mike Mann crafts hand-forged period pieces from his home in the
Idaho mountains, and here's a closer look at one of his most popular
creations.
... "THE SEA WOLF KNIFE" by HARVEY REISBERG
The inside scoop on an unusual and very rare modern collectible -
a high-end divers' knife of all things. One look at the photos and
you'll understand why they're so sought after...
... "WHERE'S THE RIVETS?" by ROBERT PALMER
Ever wonder how some American pocketknives of the 1930s, '40s,
and '50s were put together without end rivets on the handle?
Here's how, and why...
...plus, there are book reviews of two new knife texts:
COLLECTIBLE KNIVES OF FINLAND by Les Ristinen
THE CONFEDERATE BOWIE KNIFE GUIDE by Lee Hadaway
BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT features more nifty oddities this month:
an early American knife with a folding ruler in it, a superb
A. BELKNAP six-blade congress knife that would set early-American
collectors absolutely afire, an unusual Ka-Bar combat knife - or
something else, a Russell skinner that's not as old as it might
appear and an odd Chinese multiblade that aroused the suriosity of
a well known knife scribe. Something for nearly everyone...
IRONS IN THE FIRE is all about working together, while
ARTISTRY IN KNIVES features the handcrafted creations of COLIN COX,
LEE GENE BASKETT, JOHN W. WALKER III, MICHAEL RUTH, JACK DAVENPORT,
KELLY CARLSON, JAMES LEE WILLIAMS, ROBERT F. DODD, VINCE EVANS, and
some guy of little account named JERRY FISK. Of course there's also
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, our exclusive CLUB CORNER (free listings
for all nonprofit knife collecting and knifemaking organizations),
the CLASSIFIEDS, and the biggest knife related EVENTS CALENDAR
anywhere (and we do mean ANYWHERE).
(Just kidding, Jerry... couldn't resist!)
KNIFE WORLD really is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES.
We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS
________________________________________________
Maybe it's just me, but while it used to be that June-July-&-August
were the "off-months" for knives, this year there have been quite a lot
of summer activities available to knife lovers. What's up with that?
The fall is traditionally the time of year for knife events, and this
year is no exception. In the Chicago area, the AECA hosts their 26th
annual show Sept 16-18, while Michigan hosts the Wolverine Club's fall
show the same weekend and Dallas, Texas welcomes Knives Illustrated's
Spirit of Steel Show as well. The NKCA returns to Wilmington, Ohia
the weekend of the 23-25, for a show that has become quite successful
at this location (this is the one that used to be the NKCA's
Cincinnati Show.)
October is the biggest month, though -- I count 13 events on the
calendar already. Come out, and see what the knife world is up to!
For details on these and all the other upcoming knife shows/
hammer-ins/etc., check out page 36 of your September KNIFE WORLD.
