__________________________________________________________________ • " JAMES B. LILE: THE ARKANSAS KNIFESMITH " • "Knifemaker to the World" • by Jack Lucarelli and John Henry Hill Jr. • authorized by Marilyn Lile Miller __________________________________________________________________

James B. "Jimmy" Lile (1934-1991), "The Arkansas Knifesmith," was a true pioneer in the field of handmade knives. Jimmy's vast influence on the field is evident in his status as a member of both the Cutlery Hall of Fame and the Bladesmith Hall of Fame, as well as the degree to which his knives are sought after by today's collectors. Jimmy designed and made the First Blood and “Rambo - The Mission” knives for Sylvester Stallone and presented many of his handmade custom knives to Presidents, dignitaries, celebrities and high-ranking military officers.

For the past five years the authors have compiled Lile knife photos, technical data, anecdotes, personal photographs and info about Jimmy Lile with the assistance and approval of Jimmy's widow Marilyn Lile Miller. That effort has resulted in this massive new volume, with gorgeous knife photography, personal photos, historical clippings and detailed collector information such as production quantities.

Hardcover, 536 pp. with 80 pages in full color. (Weighs over 6 pounds!) $129.95. Published and printed in the good old U.S.A.

• in the mail now - the JULY 2008 issue of "KNIFE WORLD" ____________________________________________________________

JULY'S KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:

... "Wes Byrd - Soaring High" by Doc Wacholz A long overdue profile about this big hearted bladesmith with a soft spot for kids. One of knifemaking's many all-around good guys!

... "Quest for Queen’s Rawhide Series" by Mac Howard It really takes a collector to write articles for collectors, and Mr. Howard's first effort for us makes it clear that he's got the bug like the rest of us. A detailed article about this interesting series of traditional folders produced by Queen from about 1979 to 2001.

... "Effervescent Advertisers" by Richard D. White What do you suppose "Apollinaris", "Apenta" and "Presta" are? After some research, Mr. White reveals them to be brands of European mineral water, occasionally advertised on vintage pocketknife handles.

... "The Value of Kitchen Knives" by Wm. Hovey Smith A look at kitchen knives, their manufacture and use – from the "TV" variety through Murray Carter's handmade originals.

... "The British Military Gravity Knife" by Ron Flook The author of the definitive book on British military knives reveals the history of this most rare and intriguing collectible, including some variations that have just come to light.

... "Benchmade 'Dejavoo'" by M. Willson Offutt The final factory collaboration by the late Bob Lum gets the Field Trial treatment by Mr. Offutt. He likes this one too (everything except the name!)

... lots to report in "KNIFE NEWS"...

"ONTARIO KNIFE COMPANY ACQUIRES RANGER KNIVES" -- the popular hard-use brand comes under new ownership.

"SPYDERCO AND JENS ANSO COLLABORATE" -- A nifty collaboration with the Dutch designer & knifemaker.

"QUICK RELEASE KNIFE LUBRICANT" -- designed specifically for knives!

"'THE NEWSLETTER' LIVES ON!" -- the original (and much beloved) automatic & switchblade knife publication finds new life at Walt Halucha's website!

And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our full color centerspread dedicated to handmade knives? The latest issue features SAL MARANO, SHAWN ELLIS, CURT ERICKSON / JULIE WARENSKI ERICKSON, DON HETHCOAT, TOM KREIN, WESLEY DAVIS, LARRY FUEGEN, JOEL CHAMBLIN, CHARLES VESTAL, & MIKE RUTH.

As always, between the covers you'll find:

BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT (our question-and-answer section) IRONS IN THE FIRE (the editor's monthly soapbox) LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CLASSIFIEDS (wanted, for sale, and miscellaneous) CLUB CORNER (the ONLY current & complete list of knife clubs in print) EVENTS CALENDAR (covering all knife shows, hammer-ins, & other events)

(WHAT ABOUT JUNE?)

No, we didn't disappear for a month... I just got too busy with knife shows and other pursuits, and last month's email newsletter got away from me. But the June edition of KNIFE WORLD included:

... "THE WHITTLER" by JOE SEALE The first in a series of five articles addressing the longtime KNIFE WORLD correspondent's favorite patterns. Look for the second installment in our August issue... and no, I'm not going to tell you what pattern it's on!

... "UNCLE AL, THE KNIFEMAKER'S PAL" by B.R. HUGHES A detailed profile of Al Lawrence, owner of knifemakers' resource Riverside Machine Shop and a fine bladesmith in his own right.

... "A TALE OF TWO TOOLS" by FRANK KARL Spyderco's current multitool offerings include the Harp tool (under their Byrd line) the SpydeRench and ByrdRench (Spyderco and Byrd variations of the same tool). Here are the impressions of one user who has tried them all.

... "DIAMONDBLADE KNIVES" by MICHAEL BLACK Here's something different -- knives heat treated by friction rather than by direct heat. The result is a zone hardened blade that offers the well known advantages of a hard edge and soft spine, and Mr. Black finds that they test very well indeed.

... "DON'T LOSE IT" by GARRY ZALESKY A knife's personal history is one thing that we sometimes let get away in the heat of the purchase, but many of those histories are just too good to lose.

... "EYE OF THE CONDOR" by BOB CAMPBELL A quick look at a few of the varied products offered by Condor -- all made for hard use, and reasonably priced.

And in addition to the usual columns and features:

previews of the BLADE SHOW AUCTIONS to benefit both the AMERICAN BLADESMITH SOCIETY and the NATIONAL KNIFE MUSEUM

KNIFE WORLD truly is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES. We're so sure you'll love it that we offer a free trial, so you can see for yourself!

• MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS ________________________________________________

Too worn out to add anything to the above, after the NKCA Shepherdsville (KY) show, the Blade Show, Parkers' Sevierville (TN) show, and the usual craziness of periodical publishing. I'll hope to see some of you (and your kids) at the ABS sponsored Youth Hammer-in this weekend at Smoky Mountain Knife Works, also in Sevierville. Should be a lot of fun!
