in the mail now - the MAY 2008 issue of "KNIFE WORLD"
____________________________________________________________
MAY'S KNIFE WORLD contains the following articles:
... "EVOLUTION OF THE SAFETY PUSH BUTTON KNIFE" by DOUG GROWITZ
Another interesting article from Mr. Growitz, who continues to present
us with some rare and unusual examples of very collectible knives. In
this case, a very early Schrade knife helps to explain the evolution
from the Press Button Knife Co's products to the Schrade Cut. Co.
models collectors are so familiar with. Well done!
... "THE PLUG BAYONET" by WM. HOVEY SMITH
A look at the often-overlooked plug bayonet, essentially a knife with
a handle tapered so as to fit the barrel of a gun, instantly converting
the gun into a pike. History, theory, and use are all covered by
Mr. Smith, who enjoys the pursuit of historic hunting methods.
... "TOM GOODPASTURE"S SMALL HUNTER" by MICHAEL BLACK
One of Mr. Black's specialities is analytical knife testing -- this
piece started out as a knife test and wound up part test, part
knifemaker profile, and part a comment on the importance of heat
treatment methods in knifemaking. Anyone with the slightest interest
in knife performance should read this - especially knifemakers!
... "MAKER'S WIVES: THE SPOUSE CONNECTION" by STEPHEN GARGER
Just in time for Mother's Day comes this piece celebrating the role
of the supportive wife in a knifemaker's success (not to ignore the
female knifemakers of the world -- we love you too!) Profiled are
Phyllis Goddard (Wayne), Melissa Buchanan (Thad), Anne Reeve (Chris),
Shannon Deveraux (Butch), and Nancy Hendrickson (Jay).
... "UNIDENTIFIED KNIFEMAKERS OF WWII" by JOHN "FRITZ" BLACKBURN
A look at those makers who produced knives in quantity during WWII,
but who have not yet been identified. We know about the knives of
Taylor Huff, Floyd Nichols, and Frank Richtig, but what about the other
knives collectors have discovered that are unsigned and unidentified?
Here's a look at some of them, maybe you can help solve these mysteries!
... "FISHING FOR THE RIGHT KNIFE" by STEVE MASELLO
An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Masello's first article for KW investigates
some of the offerings available to anglers. These include everything
from useful pocket tools to folding fish knives to "bird and trout"
fixed blades, and of course the ubiquitous fillet knife.
... "FIELD TRIAL: MIL-TAC CE-I" by M. WILLSON OFFUTT
This month's Field Trial subject is the pointy, all-business CE-I from
Texas' Mil-Tac, a high grade, benchmade, fixed blade knife.
... lots to report in "KNIFE NEWS"...
"MeyerCo Offerings Include Designs by Blackie Collins, Randall King,
and Darrel Ralph""
You knew about Blackie of course, as he's been with the company since
its beginning - but how about the two new additions to MeyerCo's stable?
"United Cutlery Returns With Kit Rae, Gil Hibben"
Yes folks, United Cutlery is back with a new lineup that includes
products of the sort that made the company a legend in cutlery circles.
A big part of that are the relationships with designers Gil Hibben and
Kit Rae, and the new licenses with such recognizable subjects as
"Lord of the Rings". United is definitely back!
... and a couple of BOOK REVIEWS as well ...
VAN ADESTINE KNIVES: Treasures From Little Wolf, Wis. by Helmut Sakschek
and
ISLAMIC AND NATIVE WEAPONS OF COLONIAL AFRICA 1800-1960 by Anthony Tirri
(both are excellent, and we'll tell you where to get 'em)
And what about ARTISTRY IN KNIVES, our full color centerspread dedicated
to handmade knives? The latest issue features BARRY DAVIS, DAN WINKLER,
RONNIE PACKARD, RON APPLETON, PAT CRAWFORD, STEVE GATLIN, GEORGE TROUT,
CARL HALLENBECK, TERRY VANDEVENTER, and our old friend HANFORD MILLER,
who's just turned out one of the most magnificent cinquedeas you'll
ever see. Besides Hanford's old friend the late Bill Moran, few have
attempted to tackle one of these beasts!
As always, between the covers you'll find:
BERNARD LEVINE's WHUT IZZIT (our question-and-answer section)
IRONS IN THE FIRE (the editor's monthly soapbox)
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
CLASSIFIEDS (wanted, for sale, and miscellaneous)
CLUB CORNER (the ONLY current & complete list of knife clubs in print)
EVENTS CALENDAR (covering all knife shows, hammer-ins, & other events)
(WHAT ABOUT APRIL?)
No, we didn't disappear for a month... I just got too busy with knife
shows and other pursuits, and last month's email newsletter got away
from me. But the April edition of KNIFE WORLD included such articles as:
... "THE IOWA NOVELTY COMPANY" by GARRY L. ZALESKY
A well researched piece on a "producer" of picture handled knives.
(Just in case you were wondering, Garry's my father.)
... "COWBOYS & CUTTING HORSES" by LARRY ODEN
An excellent, detailed piece on collecting Buck's 700 series knives.
... "KNIVES, KNIFE RIGHTS AND PERSONAL DEFENSE" by BOB CAMPBELL
An insightful look at the state of knife laws in this country, where
we may be headed, and what we can do about it.
... "FUNNY FOLDERS" by MICHAEL BLACK
Knives that fold, but not the way you expect them to -- an overview
of what's available, by our Virginia correspondent.
... "HAMMERS & HOMILIES: GORDON GRAHAM" by B.R. HUGHES
Cutlery hall-of-famer B.R. Hughes brings us this profile of this East
Texas bladesmith, preacher, and all around nice fellow who's turning
out some mighty attractive knives.
... "THE SIGNAL CORPS LC14 and LC14-A" by FRANK TRZASKA
These rare machetes look a lot like other, more common models -- but
can be found by sharp eyed collectors. Here's the whole story of their
development, and how to spot them at a glance.
And in addition to the usual columns and features:
YOUTH HAMMER-IN TO BE HELD AT SMKW & NATIONAL KNIFE MUSEUM
... a very neat event, for those with knife-inclined kids
and
HALLMARK CUTLERY PRESENTS KISSING CRANE, CHIEF, and UZI BRANDS
...the Hall family's new offerings are expanding, with something for
just about everyone... check out those nifty Kissing Crane patterns!
and also a detailed book review of:
THE HERITAGE OF ENGLISH KNIVES by DAVID HAYDEN-WRIGHT
... reviewed by GEOFFREY TWEEDALE, author of THE SHEFFIELD KNIFE BOOK.
KNIFE WORLD truly is the ONLY publication covering the WORLD of KNIVES.
We even offer a free trial so you can see for yourself!

MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS
________________________________________________
The OFFICIAL PRICE GUIDE TO COLLECTOR KNIVES is finally out! Hooray!!
An unbelievable amount of work went into this new edition... some of
which will be obvious, like the new "cutlery and knife collecting
timeline" and the several pages of knife patterns, blade styles,
knife construction and necessary terms added near the front of the book.
But a TON of work went into things like verifying and correcting the
listings throughout every section, to make sure, for example, that
every known "numbered" Case and Remington is included and described
properly and consistently. Most readers may never notice these details,
but we know they're there!
Anyway, Houston and I hope that you enjoy the new OPG and would very
much value your feedback. Read it, use it, abuse it, and please let me
know by email or snail mail if you discover any errors, or if you have
suggestions that would make future editions even better. I'm all ears!
Finally, we seem to be having some success in getting the U.S. Postal
Service to deliver KNIFE WORLD in a more timely and reliable manner...
at least the reports I'm getting back from subscribers are improving.
Rest assured that this has come after much begging, pleading, arm
twisting, and perhaps a bit of vented anger. (Whatever we have to do
to get the service we're both paying for!) Please help us out by letting
us know if your issues haven't arrived by the second Friday of the issue
month -- we're passing this information along to USPS, and we can't try
to correct your problem if we don't know that you have one. THANK YOU!
